National Diploma in Water Engineering (NDWE)

The National Diploma in Water Engineering (NDWE) is a two-year, full-time programme designed to train technicians in the design, construction, and maintenance of water and sanitation systems. It aligns with Uganda’s “Skilling Uganda” BTVET strategy, emphasizing practical, competence-based learning focused on addressing community water, sanitation, and environmental needs.

Programme Duration and Structure

  • Duration: 2 years (4 semesters) with two 10-week industrial training sessions.
  • Each semester: 17 weeks — 15 for instruction and 2 for examinations.
  • The curriculum includes real-life projects every semester and continuous assessment through tests, practicals, and assignments.

Key Modules

The course integrates both theory and practice, covering:

  • Engineering Mathematics, Construction Technology, and Surveying
  • Fluid Mechanics, Hydrology, Water Supply, and Irrigation
  • Water Treatment, Sanitation, and Drainage
  • Quantity Surveying, Strength of Materials, and Site Management
  • Supporting modules: Computer Applications, Communication Skills, Kiswahili, and Entrepreneurship.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates are equipped to:

  • Design, construct, and supervise water supply and sanitation facilities.
  • Manage and maintain water systems and drainage networks.
  • Prepare cost estimates, budgets, and technical reports.
  • Ensure health, safety, and environmental sustainability in engineering operations.

Career and Academic Progression

Graduates can work as water engineering technicians, project supervisors, or construction assistants in both private and government sectors. They can advance to a Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering or pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Water, or Environmental Engineering.
