National Diploma in Architecture (NDAR) Overview

The National Diploma in Architecture (NDAR) is a two-year, full-time programme aimed at producing skilled architectural technicians capable of designing, constructing, and maintaining buildings and related structures. It supports Uganda’s “Skilling Uganda” BTVET strategy, focusing on competence-based, practical learning that prepares learners for the world of work.


Programme Duration and Structure

  • Duration: 2 academic years (4 semesters) with two 10-week industrial training sessions.
  • Each semester: 17 weeks (15 weeks of instruction + 2 weeks of exams).
  • Workload: 15–32 credit units per semester.
  • Learners complete real-life projects every semester to apply design and construction skills in practical environments.

Key Modules

The curriculum combines architecture, engineering, and design disciplines, including:

  • Engineering Mathematics, Construction Technology, and Surveying
  • Architectural Studio, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and Building Science
  • Quantity Surveying, Strength of Materials, and Site Management
  • Health, Safety, and Environment; Building Services; and Building Laws
  • Supporting courses: Communication Skills, Kiswahili, and Entrepreneurship.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates are expected to:

  • Design, draw, and interpret architectural and civil engineering drawings.
  • Supervise, set out, and construct buildings following industry standards.
  • Estimate and cost materials, prepare technical reports and budgets.
  • Uphold health, safety, environmental, and ethical standards at work.
  • Apply modern design software and management skills to real-life projects.

Career and Academic Prospects

Graduates can work as architectural technicians, draftsmen, site supervisors, or design assistants in construction firms, consultancies, and government agencies. They may further their studies through:

  • Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related fields.
